GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina company has entered a 20-year contract to use 1 of the State Ports Authority's terminals to export wood pellets.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Carolina-Pacific announced Wednesday it will launch its business from Georgetown this fall, shipping pellets to Europe for energy.
The company will occupy about 100,000 square feet of warehouse space in an operation that will employ at least 12 warehouse workers and an undetermined number of dock workers.
The port is located about 60 miles northeast of Charleston where the authority operates several other terminals.
The Georgetown port has handled items such as coal and cement, although cargo volumes have dropped in recent years.
