Pellet Fuels Institute Announces Fuel Standards Program
Pellet Fuel Manufacturers Are Encouraged to Participate In Development of Pellet Fuel Standards Program
June 8, 2009 (Arlington, VA) With over 2 million tons of pellets warming American homes during heating season, the Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) saw a need to provide a system to grade and standardize fuels produced by nearly 100 pellet mills throughout North America.
This standard system is being developed by PFI members to ensure that the industry remains a strong and viable participant in heating fuel and to provide a higher level of confidence regarding fuel quality to the consuming public.
While this is a PFI initiative, it does not require membership to participate, said Don Kaiser, PFI Executive Director. We want to encourage all pellet manufacturers to provide input and work with PFI to develop a standard rating system that works industry-wide while also helping consumers find and burn a quality pellet fuel product.
A quality pellet fuel is clean burning fuel and produces minimal smoke, making pellet home-heating appliances the lowest emission solid-fuel burning heating product available today. Since shipments of pellet appliances jumped 140% in 2008 from the previous year, it is clear that consumers will be looking for a quality product.
The PFI membership has recognized the need to ensure product quality in order to create a high level of purchasing comfort for consumers and their advocates. And since the manufacture of high quality pellets is a complex process, involving many variables, the PFI realizes that it is in the best position to establish a workable standards program and maintain it.
Fuel manufacturers looking to participate will benefit from early participation:
-Get in on the ground floor and have the greatest influence of shaping and modifying the program as dictated by their experience.
-Learn how to work with the process in order to minimize associated costs and maximize competitive benefits through the experience gained.
