Ontario Wood Pellet Plant Receives Approval

Cornwall, Ont.

A wood pellet production facility in Eastern Ontario has received the green light from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, reports the Cornwall Standard Freeholder.

Canadian Bio Pellet vice-president and co-CEO Dan Stasko told the paper his company has received a licence from the MNR to produce up to 360,000 tonnes of wood pellets in its first year of operation at the proposed plant in Ingleside, Ont. The proposed plant will have a capacity of 450,000 tonnes, and Stasko said the MNR licence allows for production increases in subsequent years.

"That was our go-ahead to start construction," said Stasko of obtaining the licence.

The newspaper reports that construction of the facility should take about one year to complete. It's expected the plant will create anywhere from 85 to 110 jobs.

The plant still requires final approval from the Ministry of Environment before it is put in operation, but Stasko said he doesn't anticipate any problems on that front.

The plant will produce wood pellets from compacted wood fibres. It is slated to be the largest production facility of its kind in Canada.
